GUN ARREST: Felon Brings Loaded Glock 22 & Drugs to Vanderbilt Emergency Department

Just after 6AM on Friday morning, Larry Shaeffer of Memphis, posted on his Facebook “Otw 2 Nash Vegas anyone wanna ride up? And throw down for the Weekend?”

24 hours later, on Saturday morning, Shaeffer found himself having chest pain and walked into the Vanderbilt Emergency Room. Being from Memphis, he likely didn’t expect the full security check and metal detectors at the entrance. He was carrying a black & gray backpack with drugs and a loaded gun inside. He placed his bag on the security desk and stated there was a loaded gun in the bag. Security officers then searched the bag and located “a loaded Glock 22 pistol with 7 total .40 caliber rounds, 3.17 grams of marijuana, and a digital scale and grinder that both had a green leafy residue consistent with marijuana”. A driver’s license check revealed that Shaeffer does not have a TN handgun permit. Vanderbilt is a private University and weapons are not allowed on campus or in the hospital. The MNPD reported also states “Vanderbilt staff also advised that Shaeffer mentioned to them he was a convicted felon. An NCIC search by VUPD came back with negative results.”

We’re not sure what Vanderbilt Police were searching, but as usual they were only pretending to be a real police department, because a quick search shows over a dozen charges and convictions against Schaefer, with an extensive criminal history going back decades, such as DUI, felony drug charges, even felony auto theft, among many others, across multiple states. So essentially he told Vanderbilt he was a felon and they said “nope, no you’re not”. Vanderbilt called the real police, MNPD, who charged Shaeffer accordingly. New charges from overnight are:

  • UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF A WEAPON (T.C.A. 39-17-1307) $2500 BOND
  • CARRYING A WEAPON ON SCHOOL PROPERTY (T.C.A. 39-17-1309) $2500 BOND
  • UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE (T.C.A. 39-17-418) $1250 BOND
  • UNLAWFUL USE OF DRUG PARAPHERNALIA (T.C.A. 39-17-425) $1250 BOND

Per MNPD:

On 08/05/2017 at 0905hrs, a white male with a black & gray backpack on his person was seen by VUPD on Vanderbilt property approaching the Vanderbilt Adult Emergency entrance. The male who was later indentified as “Larry Don Shaeffer” placed his backpack on the desk at the metal detector and stated he has a loaded gun in the bag. A search of the bag revealed a loaded Glock 22 pistol with 7 total .40 caliber rounds, 3.17 grams of marijuana, and a digital scale and grinder that both had a green leafy residue consistant with marijuana. A driver’s license check revealed that Shaeffer does not have a TN handgun permit. Vanderbilt is a private University and weapons are not allowed on campus or in the hospital. No weapons allowed signs are posted at the entrance as well.

Shaeffer is currently admitted at Vanderbilt ER for chest pain. Shaeffer came to Vanderbilt Hospital for an onset of chest pain. Vanderbilt staff also advised that Shaeffer mentioned to them he was a convicted felon. An NCIC search by VUPD came back with negative results. Shaeffer is currently in room B-30 at Vanderbilt ER being treated.
