Vehicle Recovered in Daniel Shields Murder Case

UPDATE / 10:30 AM THURSDAY: 

The 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer taken from the home of Daniel Shields has been recovered from the Knights Inn Motel, at 1111 Bell Rd. in Nashville. The vehicle is currently being processed at the MNPD Crime Lab.

Officers throughout the city are on the lookout for a red 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV that is believed to have been taken from the 5100 Delaware Avenue home of murder victim Daniel Shields, 30, who was found dead in the residence late Tuesday afternoon. The Trailblazer was showing Tennessee dealer tag 35299D.

Officers conducting a welfare check found Shields’ decomposing body inside his bloody apartment after going there to check on his welfare. Shields’ employer called police Tuesday after not seeing him for several days. The Medical Examiner is working to determine the exact cause of Shields’ death.

West Precinct detectives have determined that Shields was last seen at 9:30 p.m. on July 4th leaving a popular gay bar, Trax, at 1501 Ensley Boulevard. It has not yet been determined whether anyone left the bar with him.

Daniel Shields, 30, was found dead late Tuesday evening inside his home on the 5100 block of 51st Avenue in West Nashville. Shields moved to Nashville approximately five years ago from Avon Park, Florida, with high hopes for a fresh start after came out to family and friends, and felt disowned by some. According to friends he constantly struggled to find his way in life, but was well liked in Nashville’s LGBT community. Late Tuesday night, friends were remembering him on social media, and telling stories of their great memories, often at Trax, his favorite hangout, describing him as “great guy and friend”, and “a real sweetheart”. East Nashville City Councilman Brett Withers expressed he was “so sorry to hear this tragic news”.  Shields recently worked at B.B. King’s in Nashville.

His body was found during a welfare check, conducted by Metro Police. Early reports are this his car was missing from the scene, and that foul play may be suspected. The exact manner of death has not yet been released, and crime scene tape surrounded the area as of this publication on Tuesday night, as the investigation is ongoing.
