Sometimes, stories simply wouldn’t make the news, if it weren’t for the humor of some of the officers that write the probable cause affidavits. It’s not often we see it happen, but when we do, we like to share it, and in today’s fun story, we present the words of MNPD Officer David Willover, who wrote in an affidavit Wednesday:

“Hayes seemed to be surprised to learn that he had been riding around in a driverless car with a pound of marijuana. “

Torey Connell Hayes, Jr., age 22, was in a maroon Honda when Officer Taylor out of West Precinct observed it speeding on Hillsboro Pike. When he attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to stop and turned onto Harding Place. Officer Taylor and Officer Hazzard drove the area where the vehicle was last seen, when they saw two men running behind a row of houses.

After some searching, they took Torey Hayes into custody on Lavista Dr, and located the the maroon Honda in a driveway near 106 Sheffield Court. West CSU Detectives also located and took Jonathan Reyna into custody near 205 Sheffield Place, who is believed to have been the other person in the car.

Officer Taylor located 1 pound of marijuana inside a backpack that was inside the trunk of the Honda. A digital scale was also inside the backpack. Pointing to the Honda, here’s how the conversation went, according to the report filed by Officer Willover:

OFC Willover: Who does the car belong to?
Torey Hayes: “I haveĀ  no idea”

OFC Willover: Were you the driver or just a passenger?
Torey Hayes: “just a passenger”

OFC Willover: Do you know who was driving (the car you were just in)?
Torey Hayes: “I don’t know”

OFC Willover: How many people were in the car?
Tory Hayes: “it was just me in the car”

Officer Willover then asked Hayes who the pound of marijuana in the trunk belongs to and he stated that he did not know. Officer Willover noted that Hayes seemed to be surprised to learn that he had been riding around in a driverless car with a pound of marijuana.

Torey Hayes was charged with evading arrest, felony drug possession w/intent, and paraphernalia charges, and is currently held on a $16,000 bond.
