A Metro Nashville Public Schools owned laptop was stolen from a teacher’s unlocked car on Saturday in Old Hickory. On the laptop was private student data on special needs students, connected to at least 5 families.
Scoop: Nashville contacted MNPS on Sunday after a police report was filed on the stolen laptop, and on Monday when they responded, they still had not been notified of the possible data breach. A teacher had left the school owned laptop in her unlocked car overnight in Old Hickory, and woke up Sunday morning to find it had been stolen. The incident was reported to the principal of Old Center Elementary sometime on Monday.
Today, MNPS Spokesperson K. Dawn Rutledge says that the district has identified 5 families that have been impacted, and MNPS is purchasing identity-theft protection services for them as a precautionary measure. Metro also reports the laptop doesn’t appear to have been online since Friday, as best as they can determine.
It was not immediately clear exactly what type of data may have been stored on the laptop that prompted the purchase of identity theft protection for the families.
