Circuit Court Judge Hamilton Gayden, Jr., approved a $31,500 settlement Tuesday in a case of an on-duty Mt. Juliet Police Officer rear-ending a teenage driver, causing injuries to the teen. This is our second settlement report this week of a police officer rear-ending a teen driver.

According to the lawsuit, the accident occurred on February 16th, 2018, when a City of Mt. Juliet police vehicle, a Dodge Charger, driven by on-duty Mt. Juliet Police Officer Dustin Delgado,s truck the rear of a Hyundai in front of him. The driver was then 16-year-old Mekiyah Stroud. The driver of the car struck by Officer Delgado was transported to the hospital after she reportedly lost consciousness at the scene. Post accident, she has visited various doctors, including Vanderbilt orthopedic for neck and shoulder injuries and a neurology consult for a concussion.

In total, the parties have agreed on a $31,500 settlement, which restricts $10,000 to be used solely for the purchase of a vehicle for Stroud, and an additional $8,703 to be used to start a bank account for the teen, for her self-support and education. The remaining money goes to medical bills and attorney fees.

Officer Delgado was a volunteer reserve officer with the Mt. Juliet Police Department. A spokesperson for the agency says Delgado was held accountable for his actions, and had to undergo remedial vehicle operations training. He has since discontinued his volunteer service with the agency on November 26, 2018.

The lawsuit was filed in Davidson County. A copy of the settlement is below, or via PDF here.
