A Church Street nightclub that has caused a drain on police resources as the result of repeat violence, to include fights and a murder, as well as to drug and gang activity is this morning being raided and shut down.

1805 Ultra Lounge (which has also been known as Medusa Hookah Bar & Lounge and Indian Queen Lounge & Bar), 1805 Church Street, has been declared a public nuisance in a temporary injunction and padlocking order issued by Criminal Court Judge Steve Dozier.  Judge Dozier’s order prohibits the owners of the establishment, Anthony Dewayne Powell, Ankit Hemant Jariwala and Brian M. Jernigan, and anyone associated with them from entering the premises until a hearing is held on March 6th at 9 a.m.

Midtown Hills Precinct undercover detectives began an investigation of 1805 Ultra Lounge last May due to numerous police responses and complaints from other area businesses.  There have been 84 documented police and/or fire department responses to the nightclub since January 2015, one of the latest being in the early morning hours of February 20th when a man exited the business after an argument, went to his car, retrieved an assault-type rifle and began firing multiple rounds into the air.  That individual, Marion Blue, 20, of Memphis, was arrested.  The responses to the club were for a variety of issues including shootings, fights, drug issues, thefts, noise complaints and alarm calls.

Homicide Cases

On April 26, 2016, Oshay Rutledge, 24, was murdered on 18th Avenue North as he neared the nightclub where he was to have attended a party.  He ran to the establishment after being fatally wounded.  Rutledge’s cousin was ultimately charged with homicide, which, detectives believe, was connected to illegal drug activity.

On May 1, 2018, an exchange of gunfire between two groups of men inside the nightclub resulted in the murder of Marqondis Thompson, 21, and the wounding of David Young, 22.  The investigation into Thompson’s murder led to the identification of Deion Woodruff, 23, as the shooter.  Woodruff was himself found murdered at the intersection of 32nd Avenue North and Clifton Avenue on the morning of August 9, 2018.  North Precinct Detective Jason Frank is continuing to pursue leads in Woodruff’s homicide.

Alcoholic Beverage Commission Investigation

On at least two occasions in 2018, the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission found that the nightclub was serving alcohol to underage persons.

Complaints from Businesses Neighboring 1805 Church Street

One business reports to have spent thousands of dollars on security to help their counseling clients feel safe.  This same establishment had to have a fence installed to prevent access to their property from persons going to/from 1805 Church Street.  The business reports that 1805 Church Street patrons have trespassed on their property while discarding trash, alcohol, illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Another business reports having such an issue with trash coming from 1805 Church Street that they have contacted the Metro Health Department.  This business reports random graffiti appearing on the back of their building, where they tend to see patrons from 1805 Church Street.

A third business reports having to hire cleaning crews to come to its parking lot on Mondays after weekend events at 1805 Church Street.  That business also reports that its employees are afraid to walk to their vehicles when an event is taking place at the nightclub.

Anthony Dewayne Powell

Nightclub owner Anthony Dewayne Powell has felony cocaine convictions and is prohibited from owning or possessing a gun.  In May 2018, a .357 revolver was found at the desk inside his office.  An arrest warrant for Powell has been issued charging him with unlawful gun possession by a convicted felon.
