Shamar Smith, 22, is free on a $3,500 bond after police say he bruised up his girlfriend’s face with his fists and then destroyed her phone so she couldn’t call for help.

Metro Police responded to a South Nashville apartment after the victim’s mother was unable to get in touch with her, and requested a welfare check on September 3rd. The mother had received a message from an unknown number that purported to be from her daughter, stating she had been beaten and her phone smashed.

Upon arrival at the apartment, the victim and her boyfriend, Shamar T. Smith, were both inside but refused to answer the door. Eventually, the apartment complex agreed to open the door for the victim’s mother to conduct a welfare check of the occupants. The victim had bruising and scratches beneath makeup, and was reluctant to explain the incident to police for fear of what Shamar might do to her.
