“I know I shouldn’t have done it, but I shouldn’t be this drunk either, and I am.” – those are the words of 18-year-old Jacob D. Waswick, who also told police “When you take 40 mg of Xanax, & 8 shots of Captain Morgan, and want some wine, you think… well, there’s no camera, I can jump a wall, and get into a cooler, and nobody will know.”
Opryland Hotel security observed a teenager on a security video feed at 3:44 a.m. Thursday, in a closed-off area of the hotel. He appeared to move a barricade before climbing over a low wall in order to get into the closed-off area. Once inside, they say he broke into a locked cooler, which contained wine. The 18-year-old, identified as Jacob D. Waswick, then took the wine, valued at $750 back to his room, which security observed via camera.
Metro police were called to the scene to report the theft, and along with security, arrived at Waswick’s room inside the hotel. Waswick admitted to taking the wine, and it was located inside his room. It could have ended there with a trip to jail, but the talkative teen had some things to say. According to an arrest report, after being read his Miranda rights, he divulged:
“When you take 40 mg of Xanax, and 8 shots of Captain Morgan, and want some wine, you think… Well, there’s no camera, I can jump a wall and get into a cooler, and nobody will know.”

On the way to booking, Waswick also told the arresting officer:
“I know I shouldn’t have done it, but I shouldn’t’ be this drunk, either, and I am” … “I had a bunch of Xanax”…

Officers charged Jacob Waswick, 18, with vandalism, criminal trespass, and theft. He had to be held up by officers to get him from the hotel to the patrol car, as he kept falling down due to his level of intoxication. Waswick was booked at 5:23 a.m., and given pre-trial release at 8:16 a.m., less than three hours later. He is scheduled to appear in court in late January.
