40-year-old Jared Short is charged with domestic assault and trafficking for a commercial sex act near a school or park zone after police found that he forced his wife to become a prostitute through physical violence and the threat of leaving her homeless with their children.
The victim’s stepfather called in from Utah in late December to request police assistance in locating the victim after he received text messages from her phone of pictures of her battered face. Officer Martino III found a possible location for her at a Motel 6. The officer then responded to the location in order to check on her welfare. When the officer made contact with the victim, she said that at some point during December, Jared kicked her in the face causing the injuries shown in the pictures that were sent via text. The assault occurred at InTown Suites on Myatt Drive but she did not want to prosecute.
During an interview with police, Jared Short admitted to placing ads online of his wife, renting rooms, and “providing protection” for her as well. Jared stated that he told Candace to perform sexual acts or else she would “end up on the street with her kids.” The victim said that she was not only afraid of being homeless with her children but also afraid that Jared would assault her if she did not prostitute for him. She made it clear that she did not wish to prostitute. Jared later admitted to being violent with her in the past. He also said that he was the one who showed her how to post ads on an adult prostitution website. This incident at Motel 6 happened within 1000 feet of Leaps and Bounds Preschool.
Jared Short was arrested for domestic assault and trafficking for a commercial sex act near a school or park zone and is currently jailed in lieu of a $110,000.00 bond.
