23-year-old Jermal Mathis was charged with theft of a firearm and four counts of reckless endangerment after he dropped his stolen handgun and fired a shot through his floor into the apartment below.
On April 18th, officers were dispatched to 193 Burning Tree Drive in reference to a call about someone that shot a bullet through her ceiling. Upon arrival, officers noted the observation of a projectile from a handgun on Candice Young’s kitchen floor. Officers then followed the direction of travel and went to the neighboring residence at 197 Burning Tree Drive, which was right above Candice’s apartment.
Officers conducted a knock and talk and Jermal Mathis answered the door. Jermal explained to officers that he dropped his gun and a bullet went through his floor. He also told officers where he placed the gun after it accidentally discharged and that it was his because he “found it in Antioch in the cut”.
According to the affidavit, officers were able to confirm that Jermal’s gun was reported stolen. Officers also noted that during the incident, the other residence was occupied by the victims and they were all in their living room and were sitting on the couch, which was approximately 15 feet from where the bullet entered the apartment. Officers found the gun on top of Jermal’s water heater.
Jermal Mathis was charged with theft of a firearm and four counts of reckless endangerment. His bond was set at $21,500.
