Not funny: Man thrashes ex-boyfriend for joking about a check they had just cashed

41-year-old Carl Ruesch was charged with domestic assault when his ex-boyfriend cashed a check for him and jokingly asked him for all of his money. Apparently, Carl didn’t like the joke because it upset him to the point that he beat his ex. Carl claimed blood found on his hand after the incident was from a bad skin condition.

On May 12th, officers were called to a fight in a vehicle at Advance Financial on Gallatin Pike. The vehicle was located near Petway Avenue and officers spoke with Carl Ruesch. According to the affidavit, Carl explained that after his ex-boyfriend James Roberts cashed a check James jokingly asked for all his money. He also claimed that he had not assaulted James despite a visible cut on his hand. Carl stated that the bleeding on his hand was from a skin condition.

Authorities found James Roberts a few blocks south of Carl. James told officers that he knew Carl was upset about the joke so he pulled the vehicle over, at which time he advised, Carl Ruesch battered him on the head and side. Officers noted redness and bruising on James Roberts but he refused medical care or to be photographed. Carl has a prior domestic assault charge from 2008.

Carl Ruesch was arrested and charged with domestic assault. His bond was set at $2,000.
