21-year-old Charisse Johnson was charged with aggravated assault with strangulation after attacking her boyfriend by jumping on his back and leaving scratches trying to strangle him.
On February 25th, officers responded to a domestic incident at 6430 Charlotte Pike where they met with Devontae Hankins. Hankins explained that he and Charisse Johnson have been in a relationship for the last three years and just recently moved in together at 4600 Tennessee Avenue. According to Hankins, they had an argument that day that turned physical when she came home and would not give him back his property. He grabbed his car keys off a cabinet and said he would give them back when she returned his things. Hankins stated that at that point Johnson grew angry and started swinging at his face. He claimed he kept trying to remove himself from the situation by taking her phone and retreating to the bathroom.
Hankins then called her mother to try to get her to speak with Johnson and hopefully help her calm down. Instead, Johnson ran into the bathroom, jumped on Hankins’ back, and proceeded to squeeze and scratch his neck. He exited the bathroom with her still on his back screaming “give me back my phone!” Hankins returned the phone to her, gathered his things, and left the apartment to call the police. He had bleeding scratches on both sides of his neck, red marks, scratches on his shoulders, a small cut on his left eyelid, and small cuts on both elbows. Hankins was offered victim counseling, assistance getting an order of protection, prosecution, and shelter. He refused assistance saying he would prosecute later.
On August 16th, Charisse Johnson was arrested and charged with aggravated assault by strangulation. Her bond was set at $15,000.
