Woman jailed on criminal homicide, aggravated child abuse charges from March 2020 car crash

29-year-old Derrica Johnson was charged with criminal homicide, six counts aggravated child abuse, and four counts vehicular assault when she allowed her drunk friend to drive her vehicle which resulted in a crash that ended one man’s life and injured multiple people, including children.

On March 21st, a two-vehicle crash occurred in front of 280 Haywood Lane. A Chevy Impala driven by 25-year-old Robert McMutuary was traveling eastbound on Haywood Lane when it crossed over the double yellow line and struck a Nissan Altima. Derrica Johnson was the registered owner of the Impala which was occupied by McMutuary, Derrica, 62-year-old Edward Wilkins Jr., Derrica’s 2-year-old daughter, and 5-year-old son.

Mr. Wilkins was not wearing his seat-belt in the rear passenger seat and died on the scene. The crash also resulted in serious bodily injury to both of Derrica’s children. Neither of the children was in a child safety restraint and there was no evidence suggesting that they were even restrained with a seat-belt. The driver of the Nissan Altima was Vincent Thompson II and the passenger was Kameron Fudge. The crash caused serious bodily injury to both Vincent and Kameron.

When Metropolitan Nashville Police officers arrived on the scene they observed an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Mr. McMutuary’s breath. Officer Nave from the DUI Unit conducted an investigation of Mr. McMutuary at Vanderbilt Hospital. A search warrant was obtained for his blood and on March 26th, the lab returned a toxicology screen showing Mr. McMutuary had a blood alcohol content of 0.285%, approximately three hours after the crash. On March 22nd, Robert McMutuary was arrested and charged with financial responsibility resulting in injury or death, vehicular homicide, four counts aggravated child abuse, five counts vehicular assault, and driving without a license. He is currently in custody awaiting trial.

On September 8th, Derrica Johnson was arrested and charged with criminal homicide, six counts aggravated child abuse, and four counts vehicular assault. She is currently jailed in a lieu of a $265,000 bond.
