27-year-old Matthew Mckenzie was charged with aggravated assault after he strangled his sister-in-law while his wife was kicking her out of the apartment.

On October 13th, Metro Nashville Police Officers responded to a call at 2345 Atrium Way, La Quinta Inn and Suites. When officers arrived they spoke with Kayla Joyner. Kayla told officers she was at her sister Kira Mckenzie’s apartment on 5731 River Road when she realized her cash app card was nowhere to be found. She reported she went to a Thorntons with her sister and told her she believed her sister’s husband, Matthew Mckenzie, had stolen it.

They both returned to the apartment when Kayla made a remark to Matthew about him taking her card. Kira yelled at Kayla and told her to get her stuff and leave her apartment. While she was in the process of collecting her things, her sister started grabbing her stuff to throw outside. Kayla pushed her to prevent her from taking her items and Kira swung at her.

She swung back at her sister and while she was attacking her, Matthew wrapped his arm around her throat from behind and strangled her until she was unconscious. Kayla contacted police and met them at La Quinta Inn and Suites. Officers went to Kira’s apartment in an attempt to speak with them, but no one answered the door. There were no noticeable injuries on Kayla.

On October 15th, Matthew Mckenzie was arrested and charged with aggravated assault by strangulation. He is currently jailed in lieu of a $15,000 bond.
