39-year-old Gerard Matthews was charged with public intoxication and trespassing when he was caught on two separate occasions being belligerent outside of different businesses just days apart.
On October 11th, Metro Nashville Police officers were dispatched to Tiger Market located at 1401 Charlotte Avenue in reference to a man being belligerent at the location. Upon arrival, officers witnessed Gerard Matthews banging on the door telling the employee to let him in.
When officers made contact with Matthews, he seemed to be under the influence of a narcotic or alcoholic beverage. Officers noticed he had dilated pupils, slurred speech, was very unsteady when walking, and was yelling at everyone. The employee of Tiger Market stated he had been banging on the door yelling at him and he did not want Matthews at the location anymore for fear of his safety. Officers asked Matthews to leave the location several times and he refused.
On October 13th, Metro Nashville Police officers were dispatched to the Kroger located at 200 Gallatin Pike South due to Gerard Matthews banging on the doors of the business after hours. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Matthews who stated he was trying to get a beer. He advised police he already consumed half a pint of vodka. Officers observed him be unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech. He was determined to be a danger to himself and the public.
Gerard Matthews was arrested and charged with public intoxication and criminal trespassing. He was found guilty of trespassing and the other charge was dismissed.
