37-year-old Jazrail Burns was charged with aggravated assault and violating a protection order after he reportedly punched his unborn child’s mother in the face, then gave her a ride to a women’s mission later that night.

On November 12th, Metro Nashville Police officers were dispatched to 1716 Rosa L Parks Boulevard in response to a domestic-related issue. When officers arrived, they made contact with Chynna Derrick, who stated she was, “hanging out,” at the Parthenon park at West End Avenue that morning. She told officers the father of her unborn child and ex-boyfriend, Jazrail Burns, walked up and, “punched her in the face.” Derrick stated she received “black eyes due to the incident.”

Derrick stated Burns then fled the scene and she did not contact the police. She also told officers that she had an active order of protection against him, which was later confirmed through their system. According to the affidavit, Derrick went to Vanderbilt hospital due to unrelated issues. As she proceeded to walk home, she saw Burns driving by, so she “flagged him down and asked him for a ride, so she could then call the police.”

When they spoke with Burns, he denied Derrick’s accusations. He claimed, “she is lying about the assault,” but did admit to offering her a ride to a “safe place” and taking her to a women’s mission. Burns stated, “he believes Chynna manipulated him into violation of the temporary order of protection.”

Jazrail Burns was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and violating an order of protection. He was later released on a $10,000 bond.
