21-year-old Karlissia Singleton was charged with aggravated assault after she was caught on video spitting at her mother’s boyfriend during an argument and reportedly threatened him with a pair of scissors.
On November 20th, Metro Nashville Police officers were dispatched to 403 Brooks Mill Circle in reference to a domestic-related issue. Karlissia Singleton currently lives with her mother and Marquis Knox, her mother’s boyfriend. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Singleton who stated she got into an argument with her mother and Knox after she was picked up in Chattanooga, Tennessee from visiting her girlfriend. She told officers Knox grabbed her belongings and threw them out of the vehicle when they were parked outside of their apartment complex.
According to Singleton, Knox was aggressively yelling and called her names before assaulting her with his hands. She stated once this happened she spit at him in self-defense and threw a cologne bottle at the parked vehicle. Singleton stated she proceeded to go into the apartment while her mother and Knox continued to argue. She told officers that Knox grabbed a pair of scissors once he was inside the apartment to attack her, so she ripped them from his hand and cut herself in the process. Singleton provided video footage mostly of a wall where you can hear arguing then she picked up the phone and waved her bloody hand around while yelling.
Officers then took statements from her mother and Knox, whose stories were the same. They stated Singleton was being argumentative and disrespectful to them in the vehicle and she threw her own belongings on the ground when they were parked in front of the apartment complex. Her mother stated she was still inside of the vehicle when they were arguing outside, then exited the vehicle to tell them to stop arguing. She stated Singleton said she would break all of the windows of the car before she threw a cologne bottle at the vehicle. Singleton’s mother reportedly told her that she would need to find another place to stay if she was going to be disrespectful. Knox admitted he grabbed her in an attempt to calm her down. He stated as he and Singleton were walking toward the apartment he turned and asked her, “Where do you think you’re going?”
He told officers that Singleton proceeded to lunge toward him and spit. An anonymous witness also captured and showed the police a video of her spitting at Knox and being aggressive toward him. Her mother and Knox told officers that once they were inside of the apartment Singleton grabbed a pair of scissors and held them in a threatening manner over her head as if she was going to stab Knox. He stated he held her down and took the scissors from her causing cuts on her hands. Based on the video footage, witness statements, and inconsistencies in Singleton’s story, they found probable cause to take her in.
Karlissia Singleton was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She was later released on a $10,000 bond.
