Teen charged with vehicular assault after admitting in ER that he was drinking before accident

19-year-old Yehiys Nigatu was charged with vehicular assault after he hit another driver head-on and spontaneously admitted, in front of MNPD in the emergency room, to drinking a quarter of a bottle of vodka before driving.

On October 24th, Metro Nashville Police Officer Jonathon Handley was notified of a car accident with injuries near the McDonald’s on 2499 Murfreesboro Pike. A vehicle driven by Yehiys Nigatu had crossed over the center dividing lane of Murfreesboro Pike and hit the vehicle Taqawunia Tarleton was driving head-on. Tarleton had to be extracted by the Nashville Fire Department. Both parties were transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center Emergency Room.

While at the emergency room, Nigatu made a spontaneous statement saying he had drunk one-quarter of a fifth of vodka four hours before driving. He made the statement in the presence of Officer Brandon Lopez. Officer Handley started driving under the influence investigation. Dr. Milad Behdananinia, Tarleton’s doctor, advised that Tarleton was suffering from a life-threatening and serious bodily injury. Nigatu admitted to Officer Handley that had drunk vodka four to five hours before the accident but refused to answer any further without a lawyer present.

Yehiys Nigatu was arrested and charged with vehicular assault. He was released on a $15,000 bond.
