42-year-old Deshon Murphy was charged with two counts of felon in possession of a handgun, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and reckless endangerment after threatening to shoot someone who bumped into him at the grocery store.
On December 6th, Metro Nashville Police officers were sent to 3532 Murfreesboro Pike in response to a person making threats with a firearm. When officers arrived they made contact with Marcus Cunningham, who reported a man later identified as Deshon Murphy accidentally bumped into him while they were grocery shopping. He stated when he started to apologize, Murphy turned away from his children and told Cunningham, “if you do that again I am going to shoot you,” while pulling out a silver and black handgun.
Cunningham tried to apologize again, but Murphy continued to make threats while holding the handgun at his side. Officers were contacted and found Murphy inside the store in the process of checking out. A firearm was initially not found and due to the lack of physical evidence, Murphy was allowed to leave. Later, officers found a silver and black Taurus 9mm handgun on a shelf in the aisle that Murphy was in. When surveillance footage was reviewed, it showed Murphy had noticed when police entered the store and put the gun on the shelf behind a bag of potato chips. Officers also found that Murphy has prior felony convictions and is not permitted to possess a firearm.
On December 7th, officers went to Murphy’s house with the three warrants and noticed the tail lights of a vehicle at the back of his residence. When officers approached, Murphy walked outside the garage and was taken into custody. When Murphy was taken into custody, he was searched and officers found a firearm in his pocket.
Deshon Murphy was arrested and charged with two counts of felon in possession of a handgun, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and reckless endangerment. He was later released on a $75,000 bond.
