31-year-old Gustavo Roman was charged with aggravated assault and domestic assault in regard to two separate incidents in 2016 and 2019. The mother of his children said he assaulted her on both occasions.
On July 10th, 2016, Wilma Cortez told Metro Nashville Police officers that Gustavo Roman, her baby’s father, came to her residence intoxicated. She stated Roman accused her of stealing $200 from him. According to Cortez, she told Roman she did not steal the money. When she told him this, Roman began to assault her by pulling her hair. She also stated he struck her in the face before he threw her to the ground and strangled her to the point of which she could not breathe. Once Cortez’s uncle entered when he heard the altercation, Roman fled the scene. Cortez sustained injuries that confirmed her story.
On July 23rd, 2019, Metro Nashville Police officers were dispatched to 1019 Patricia Drive regarding a domestic-related issue. Wilma Cortez told officers that she and Gustavo Roman have been separated for 3 years and he came to visit the kids. She stated when she asked him to leave he refused. Cortez told officers he then threatened to kill himself and cut his wrist with a knife. She stated once this occurred she attempted to stop the bleeding and proceeded to go outside to grab the rest of her clothing from the car. Cortez stated Roman then shoved the car door into her and punched her in the face. Officers observed a large knot on her eye and a scratch on her arm.
On November 29th, 2020, Gustavo Roman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault by strangulation and domestic assault. He was later released on a $13,000 bond. The 2019 domestic assault charge was dropped on December 4th, 2020, and Roman’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 28th, 2021.
