A Nashville couple started their Saturday evening partying in downtown Nashville together but woke up in separate jail cells Sunday morning. Witnesses reported Nashville Christian School teacher Leah Riek repeatedly slapped her boyfriend, John Ladd, in the face and police found them heavily intoxicated and lying in a parking lot, too drunk to stand at 6:38 p.m.

Metro Nashville Police were dispatched to a parking lot near 4th Ave. S. & Peabody St in downtown Nashville early Saturday evening and met with witness Kenneth McRae, who stated he saw 29-year-old Leah Riek slap her boyfriend, 30-year-old John Ladd in the face. Leah was lying on the ground of the parking lot between two vehicles, and John was lying on the trunk of someone else’s vehicle, as both were too intoxicated to stand on their own. As Leah attempted to get up and stand, she reportedly slapped her boyfriend in the face once, then twice, and then attempted to slap him a third time, but failed.

Leah Riek admitted the assault to the police and was taken into custody. As police were completing the paperwork for her boyfriend, John Elliott Ladd, who was the assault victim, he remained heavily intoxicated and was unable to find a way to get home without driving. Officers observed him walking up to random vehicles and attempting to enter them, and asked him several more times to contact a rideshare or find a way home, and also offered him an ambulance ride to the hospital to get checked out, but he refused all assistance and was too intoxicated to book a hotel room. Due to his state, officers took him into custody for his own safety.

Leah Riek was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail, charged with domestic assault. John Ladd was charged with public intoxication, and his charge was dismissed the next morning when he sobered up. Riek posted a $2,000 bond and was released after the state-mandated 12-hour hold for domestic violence arrests.

A few years ago I had John Ladd as my ELA teacher in 7th grade at Gladeville Middle School. Just when Summer Break was around the corner, I saw my classmates all huddled together in a circle discussing something. That’s when I found out my teacher and his girlfriend were arrested. I was so shocked that I decided to secretly leave a message on his desk saying about what he had done.
