At 6 p.m. Saturday on Percy Priest Lake, TWRA Officer Joshua Landrum asked 24-year-old Jet Skier Orrie Reed Whitton when he last smoked marijuana. Whitton replied: “when the sun was still up”. The agent reminded him the sun had been up for the last 12 hours, and wouldn’t set for another 2. Whitton was jailed on 5 charges this weekend, and he reportedly told the officer he “doesn’t care what happens to him”.
While on lake patrol, an officer noticed a jet ski without a visible registration number, however, it turned out to be on the top cap and not the required two sides of the bow. While speaking with the operator of the jet ski, the officer recalls smelling a strong odor of both alcohol and marijuana coming from the man, who was identified as Orrie Reed Whitton. He was unable to produce a boating license or registration. When asked for his driver’s license for identification, he produced a dry box containing his ID and a small wooden box, which he admitted contained a one-hitter and some marijuana when asked. Whitton says he had three alcoholic drinks. After the prior conversation about smoking marijuana while the sun was still up, he then said he smoked 2-3 hours prior, and eventually settled on over 4 hours since he last smoked. SFST’s were completed, and he reportedly performed poorly on all tests. After initially agreeing on a blood draw, once they arrived at Summitt Medical Center, he refused and stated he didn’t care what happens to him.
Orrie Reed Whitton [IG], 24, was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail at 7:58 p.m. on Saturday, June 5th, charged with BUI (boating under the influence), BUI Implied consent violation, boating violation, boating ID violation, and drug possession. He was released on pre-trial release for all the charges to his Brentwood, TN address. He is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
