A 27-year-old Los Angeles man, Syrus Jenkins, was found confused and causing a disturbance at the 7-Eleven in downtown Nashville at 9 a.m. Monday, where he had been for over 4 hours believing he was still in Los Angeles and seemed to be under the influence of an unknown substance. He was booked into jail, but freed 2 hours later on pre-trial release. He then somehow found his way to Brentwood, where he entered a family’s garage and beat on the inner door to their house, threatening to kill them once he got past that door. The family armed themselves with a machete and waited 18 minutes for MNPD to arrive.

Police initially took Syrus into custody at the convenience store at 1111 Broadway at 9 a.m. Monday, after employees reported he had been there since around 4 a.m. aggressive approaching employees, attempting to come behind the counter, walking in circles around the property, and talking excessively to everyone he encountered. Police say he appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance and was adamant that he was in Los Angeles, California, where he lives. He was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Inmate records show he was admitted into the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office at 10:57 a.m. on July 5th, cleared medically at 11:57 a.m., and was set free on pre-trial release at 12:32 p.m. Generally, there is an eight-hour hold for public intoxication arrests, but a spokesperson from DCSO explained the hold is not mandated by state law and will be waived if a sober ride can be verified, which typically happens via a phone call.

Exactly four hours and fifty-five minutes later, at 5:27 p.m., Nashville’s Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from Calistoga Way in South Nashville/ Brentwood. The caller reported a man, now identified as the same Syrus Jenkins, knocked on their front door, and since he was a stranger they refused to open the door. He then banged on the front windows and walked into the attached garage. The inner door between the garage and home was locked, however, that did not stop Jenkins from kicking and banging on it, while screaming he was going to kill them as soon as he got inside. He was told to leave multiple times, to which he replied with obscenities. The family armed themselves with a machete in case he made it through the inner door, scared for their lives.

Eighteen minutes after the 911 call, Metro Nashville Police arrived at the location to find the stranger in the garage and took him into custody. The door was covered with shoe marks and scuffs from where he continued to attempt entry into the home.

At 7:40 p.m. on July 5th, Syrus Devonn Jenkins was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail for the second time on the same day, this time with an additional charge of felony attempted aggravated burglary. He is once again free, this time on a $20,000 bond. He is represented by public defender Jennifer Dusenberry. DCSO Booking reports indicate the bruising and injuries are only present in the second booking photo, and not the one from earlier in the day.

18 minutes to get to the family’s home…in Brentwood? Really, and thank God he didn’t gain entry before they strolled in to help? And why do they keep letting this mope out of jail, he’s obviously dangerous.
