Nashville attorney Richard Dumas was found asleep in his car on Nolensville road this weekend, sitting crossways with traffic. When even woke up, he drove the car down a steep ditch, despite a citizen attempting to help him. He reportedly reeked of alcohol and had vomited on himself. Also, he was carrying a loaded Polish P-64 Makarov handgun in the vehicle.

A citizen found 50-year-old Richard Dumas asleep in the driver’s seat of his vehicle on July 2nd on Nolensville Pike, near Winston Ave. Despite knocking on the window, he could not awaken Dumas. He opened the door to the car, which was stopped perpendicular to the lanes of travel, and partly in the right lane.

After the citizen opened the door, Dumas woke up and drove the vehicle off the roadway down a steep ditch. The citizen reported that Dumas smelled of alcohol, and noted he had vomited on himself.

MNPD Officer Bradley Nave arrived on the scene to find Dumas seated on the back step of an ambulance and attempted to speak to him. Nave noted that Dumas was unable to stand without falling down, was had difficulty staying awake, and had extremely slurred speech, making field sobriety tests too dangerous. A loaded Polish P-64 Makarov handgun was found in the floorboard of the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

Dumas refused a blood draw, however, Nave procured a warrant from a night court commissioner, and it was completed at Nashville General. Those results are pending.

Dumas, who in 2017 told a Tennessean reporter he “must charge the media for his time and the news organization should deposit $10,000 into his account” before asking questions, is a Nashville lawyer who appears near the top of paid search for DUI related attorneys in google searches. On his website, he notes he “has spent years building relationships with Davidson County judges, prosecutors, and police officers.  Because of these key relationships, along with his experience and knowledge of the law, he is able to provide top-notch representation”

Richard D. Dumas was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail at 1:25 a.m. on Saturday, July 3rd, charged with driving under the influence and possession of a handgun while under the influence. He is free on pre-trial release. Dumas was previously charged with DUI in November of 2016, and after hiring attorney Rich McGee, the charge was reduced to reckless endangerment, and he received a probated sentence of 11/29.
