An officer with the TWRA says 27-year-old Taylor Hampton Elliott gave the open can of White Claw he was drinking to a nearby swimmer as he approached him and his jet ski on Percy Priest Lake near Party Cove this weekend. Elliott is charged with being heavily intoxicated while recklessly operating a jet ski. BUI charges now carry the same weight as DUI charges in Tennessee. He is free on pre-trial release.

| On September 4, 202 1 at approximately 2:30 pm while patrolling Percy Priest Lake, I noticed a jet-ski style vessel operating in the “Party Cove” area driven by an individual who had an open container of an alcoholic beverage in his hand, his lifejacket was not zipped up, and be had a passenger riding on the back deck of the jet ski with no lifejacket on (Reckless Operation TCA 69-9-2 16). The cove was very congested and upon initiating my blue lights and calling the operator of the jet ski over to me, he gave his beverage and another beverage to someone who was swimming in the water. I asked the operator to remove his sunglasses and his eyes were watery and bloodshot. Additionally, the subject smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage. I asked him how much he had to drink that day and he stated a couple. I then asked him to come aboard my vessel to complete FST’s and he complied. He performed poorly on the FST’s and was placed under arrest for BUI (TCA 69-9-217a). Upon searching the vessel I found an additional empty can of White Claw. |
