Man say he stole laptop & phone from church “to do God’s work” — Edward Thompson

When police asked 30-year-old Edward Thompson why he had taken several items, including a laptop and cell phone, from the downtown First Baptist Church on Broadway he told them “That’s my church and I own it”, and continued to explain that he took the items “to do God’s work”. Security footage shows him breaking through a window to access the items inside the church. He was charged with burglary and is free on pre-trial release after just two hours in custody.

ARREST WARRANT / AFFIDAVIT:
Staff of the First Baptist Church located at 601 Broadway observed the suspect walk into the church and take several items that belonged to the church. Staff confronted the suspect about the items, but the suspect refused to stay behind and left the scene. The suspect was located by another staff member in front of the Exxon Station located at 1101 Broadway with the items taken from the church.

When police arrived, contact was made with Mr. Davenport (church staff) he showed police a photo of the suspect inside the church with the items taken. Mr. Davenport stated that a tool kit, cooler, and some articles of clothing were taken. Police then talked with the suspect and asked if he was in or around the church and he stated “That’s my church and I own it”.

Police looked at the items the suspect had in his possession and it matched the items that Mr. Davenport described to police as being the items taken from the church. The suspect was placed into custody and advised of his Maranda rights. When asked if he took the items from the church, he stated that he took the items from the church “To do God’s work”.

Mr. Davenport looked over the items and stated that the cooler, tool kit, laptop computer, cell phone, stocking cap, door access cards belonged to the church. Mr. Davenport then took back possession of the listed items. Police then drove back to the church to better assess the scene and it was discovered that the suspect had damaged a window to gain access to the church. The suspect cut his hands entering the church leaving blood at the scene. This incident was captured on a security camera from the church and they have provided a copy of the footage to aid in prosecution.
