21-year-old Sarah Mays says she had a “few Jell-O Shots” and a “Mike’s Hard Tall Boy” at a bar prior to driving Friday night. Once on the road, police say she told them she was just “following her GPS” after she was stopped for making a left turn from a right-turn-only lane. During the traffic stop, officers reportedly smelled alcohol and noticed her slurred speech. She agreed to perform field sobriety tests, all of which indicated intoxication. Her breathalyzer result was over twice the legal limit, a 0.169 BAC. She was transported to jail, charged with DUI, and is free on pre-trial release.

| On 18 December 2021 at approximately 0019 hours, I observed a vehicle make a left turn from a right turn only road. Indicators of right turn only are painted on Jackson Blvd. along with signs. I conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Ms. Sarah Mays, that stated she was just following her GPS. While speaking with her, I detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage and slurred speech. I asked her to step out of the vehicle to which she complied. During HGN, I observed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45. During Walk and Turn, Ms. Mays stopped while walking, stepped off line, used arms for balance, made an incorrect number of steps, and attempted to continue the task while walking straight rather than making a turn as instructed. While speaking with Ms. Mays, she stated that she was returning from a bar where she consumed one Mike’s Hard tall boy. She later stated that she also had a “few” Jell-O shots. Breathalyzer displayed a BAC of 0.169. |
