Man tries to snatch his child, threatens her mother during custody hearing

39-year-old Melvin Pope was charged with harassment with emotional distress when he attempted to yank his 8-year-old daughter from her mother’s arms after emergency custody was filed, and he threatened to kill her.

On August 18th, Metro Nashville Police officers responded to 227 Shelby Avenue in regards to a domestic disturbance. Officers spoke to Brandi Toney, who advised that she was at 100 Woodland Street for a custody hearing with Melvin Pope. Brandi stated that Melvin was angry that the emergency custody hearing been filed for their 8-year-old daughter and he attempted to yank the child from her arms.

Brandi informed police that while he was attempting to take their daughter from her arms, he said “I am going to take your life. I am going to kill you.” She told police that she and her daughter were not injured, but she feared for her well being.

On September 14th, Melvin Pope was arrested and charged with harassment with emotional distress. His bond was set at $2,000.
