31-year-old Michael David Grout admitted to having two Vodka drinks before driving Sunday night, and police found a bottle of cassette head cleaner (AKA poppers) which he admitted he would huff. He is charged with DUI and free on pre-trial release.

COMPLAINT:
2021-0493336
ARREST WARRANT / AFFIDAVIT:
On 09/19/2021, at approximately 2327, I observed a dark-colored vehicle traveling in front of me outbound on Gallatin Pike. I observed the vehicle cross the broken centerline with its right-side tires, change lanes into the curb lane where on two occasions drifted to the right driving on the white fog line almost striking the curb.

I initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle and made contact with the driver, Michael David T. Grout, and while speaking to him could smell the obvious odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his vehicle, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, and he admitted to consuming two Vodka and soda drinks.

I requested he step out of the vehicle and upon making contact I determined the odor of an alcoholic beverage was coming from his expelled breath and person. Based on the traffic infraction observed, indicators of impairment observed during my personal contact, and his admission to consuming the mixed drinks, I requested he perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (sfst’s) which he agreed to do.

The suspect was taken into custody for DUI based on the driving observed, indicators of impairment observed during my personal contact, multiple indicators of impairment during each of the sfst’s, and his admission to consuming the alcoholic beverages.

While searching the suspect incident to arrest I located a bottle of cassette head cleaner which the suspect stated he would huff. Based on my training and experience as a DRE I know individuals use solvents such as this to get high.

The suspect was read the Tennessee implied consent law and refused a breath test. Based on the suspect being in custody for DUI I obtained a search warrant for two vials of blood for the evidence in it for the crime of DUI which the suspect is in custody for. The blood test was conducted at Nashville General Hospital.
