John Carlton: “I’m a 74-year-old veteran & I’m not going to pay!” as he steals ice from store

75-year-old John Carlton started throwing ice in the back of his 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe that he did not intend to pay for. When an employee of the Exxon on Broadway, Desirae Boyd, where John was taking the ice from, was alerted, she approached John. She said that at first, he was nice but became angry when she told him that he would have to pay for the ice. He said that he was a “74-year-old veteran, and I’m not going to pay” and that he had no money and was panhandling. Desirae said that he then pulled out a small knife and began jabbing at her at a close distance to stab her while also threatening her. She told him that she had a knife and would defend herself with it. John then placed all of the ice back into the freezer and left. Police were shown a video on Desirae’s phone that showed him in a blue Adidas tracksuit, loading the ice from his vehicle to the freezer and driving away. Officers pulled the license plate from the video, saw that the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe was in his name, and positively identified him by looking up his license.
