DUI: Matthew Simmons drives erratically, tells officers somebody was following him

42-year-old Matthew Steven Simmons was swerving on I-40 in the late hours of Sunday. Officers observed this and conducted a traffic stop. Simmons advised officers that somebody was following him but had no explanation for his erratic driving. He refused to participate in sobriety tests, squatted on the ground, and began saying, “Please don’t hurt me,” repeatedly. Officers asked him to calm down, reassuring him that no one was trying to hurt him. He then began to walk into oncoming traffic. They tried to guide him to the patrol car, but he was uncooperative, screaming, “Help me,” as he hit his head on the asphalt numerous times. He was transported to Nashville General, where he was read implied consent, which he denied. Simmons was taken into custody for driving under the influence, implied consent, resisting arrest, and failure to maintain lanes.
