According to the affidavit, when she insisted to take the engagement ring back that was sitting on the arm of the couch, he allegedly grabbed her by the neck, pushed her face into the couch, and put his hand over her face. Waterman then allegedly pushed hard enough for her to not be able to breathe. She further stated that his fingernail is what scratched her face during her struggle to break free. Once she broke free, she left the basement where this took place to go outside and called the authorities.

Richard Waterman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault by strangulation. His bond was set at $25,000.
