64-year-old Floyd Cowan III is free on a $20,000 bond after admitting to police he took silver bars and coins from the safe of an elderly man he was caring for. The victim’s son caught him in the act of removing more items from the safe after the initial theft. Cowan was able to get into the safe by ‘resetting’ the locking code to factory settings with assistance from a local hardware store. He told a pawn shop, which gave him $5,600 for the $7,000 worth of silver items, that his grandfather gave him the silver bars and coins. Cowan is an in-home worker for the elderly, and well-beloved at the Mt. Zion church in Nashville, where his wife, Princess Cowan, is an Elder.

COMPLAINT:
2021-0468861
ARREST WARRANT / AFFIDAVIT:
The defendant is an in-home worker for the victim who is elderly. On 09/04/2021 the victim and witness (his son) found the defendant inside their locked safe. The defendant had his hand inside a bag of silver that had been secured inside the safe.

The defendant was confronted by the witness about the incident and stated he had “just pressed a button” and the door opened. This was recorded on a cell phone video. The defendant was questioned as to why he knew the code for the safe as well as why there were bars of silver missing. The defendant told the witness that he had gone to a home improvement store to help get the code reset at the request of the victim.

The defendant stated he did not know why the silver was missing. The victim stated this was not requested of the defendant and he should have not been inside the safe for any reason.

After the defendant was asked to leave the residence, the victim went back through the safe and found a large amount of the silver he had placed in the safe was missing. The victim estimated the amount to be well over $5,000 worth.

With the help of the witness and video footage of the safe from July 4th weekend (the weekend the safe was installed in the home), the victim was able to see the large bars of silver that were in the safe, as well as numerous silver coins, were no longer inside. It was at this point the victim called police to file a report (21-0468861) and provided officers with the defendant’s information.

I contacted the defendant by phone and he admitted to taking the silver from the safe. The defendant stated he sold it at a pawn shop at the request of the victim’s deceased wife. The defendant went on further and stated he had no clue where the money was from the transaction.

When asked why he was inside the safe on September 4 (after the victim’s wife had passed away), he stated he just “pressed a button” and the door opened but was unable to explain his motive behind touching the safe. The victim stated he has not received nor seen any of the associated funds and stated the defendant was never authorized to touch the silver, furthermore, not authorized to be inside the safe.

The transactions the defendant conducted at the Music City Pawn (victim in the related incident 21-0484815) located at 3930 Lebanon Pike in Hermitage TN on July 18th, 20th, 28th, and 30th were located. I placed holds on all the remaining items (Approximately $120 worth of coins had not been sold).

The employees at the location stated the defendant had come to pawn the silver stating he received the silver from his grandfather as a gift. The employees stated the retail value of the silver was around $7000 and they paid the defendant $5600.

The victim is an elderly person who is being cared for by the defendant as an in-home worker. The defendant took the victim’s silver which had a monetary retail value above $7000. The defendant took advantage of the professional trust instilled by the victim within his own residence. The defendant used the victim’s age, medical handicaps, and lack of mobility to commit these thefts against the victim.
