43-year-old Carl Wayne Martin, of Carthage, faces multiple charges after becoming unruly at the Nashville International Airport and refusing to wear a mask, as mandated for his flight on Southwest Airlines. Airport police were called to gate C18 after Martin was denied boarding when he refused to wear a mask for COVID-19 precautions & policy. Flight attendants and police noted that Martin also appeared to be heavily intoxicated during their interactions. He was offered the opportunity to simply leave the area but refused, so was placed into custody. He pulled away from the arresting officers and refused to get inside the police car for transport, requiring multiple officers to place him in the car against his will. Martin is charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and resisting arrest. He is free on pre-trial release.

| On 11/20/2021 I was serving as unit 218, when I was dispatched to gate C18 for an individual who had been denied boarding by Southwest Airlines. Upon arrival, I learned that Mr. Martin was asked to put on his mask because it is a SouthWest policy to fly with them. Mr. Martin refused to comply and became very disruptive. Due to his behavior, the Pilot and Flight Attendants informed Mr. Martin that he would not be flying with SouthWest tonight. Southwest Flight Attendants stated they noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from Mr. Martin’s breath. I attempted to escort Mr. Martin from the area and he stated that he was not leaving and refused to leave. I noted a strong smell of alcohol coming from Mr. Martin’s breath. After asking Mr. Martin to leave the area multiple times, he continued to refuse. He was informed that he would be placed under arrest if he did not leave the area. While being placed under arrest Mr. Matrin attempted to pull away while being placed in handcuffs. Once in handcuff’s Mr. Martin refused to get inside of the police car and had to be placed inside of the patrol car. |
